Measuring the temp of your tyres on the Esprit
Discussion
Hi there I have been told that measuring the temperature across the width of the tyre while very hot and ajusting the pressure so its even will give best performance? Can you also get an indication while they are cold too? I am thinking not but would be interested how you guys tune your tyres correctly.
I have been playing around with a infra-red gun that I borrowed from the lab at work and found the tyres were hotter in the middle by 3-4 deg c. Much higher than the sides after a long hard run in the car. So I am thinking this can't be good for best grip. I let some air out to bring it within 1-2 deg c after another run and felt kinda better, but not sure think its just in my head.

For racing I measure my tire temps. They should be within 10 degres F across the tire. Take three readings, outer, center, inner. The tire temp will depend on the tire and compound used. They should be measured as soon as posible (waiting 2-3 minutes will give incorrect temps) as they cool down fast and do not cool down evenly. When ever there is a higher temp the tire is making making more contact with the road. You want to measure the temp after you make numerous turns. When going in a streight line they do not create much temperature rise and may actually cool the tire.
Hey thanks heaps, this makes sense what type of measuring instrument do you use?
I recently put Toyo RA-1's on, a very sticky soft compound race tire. So have been trying to get readings off them after a few runs. But I guess I wont really know till I get her on the track end of this month.

I dunno Kylie. I'm just glad you don't work for NASA...

Oh yeah Ernest while he plays with his new Alpine state of the art tracking device, he taps the buttons... "oohh look there goes Kylie pulling into her drive at home, arrh what a lovely garage for her Esprit".
