Had my 93 Esprit out yesterday for a several hour drive. Near the end, a whine started behind me and to my right (driver's right, US car). Sounded like it might be coming from the cylindrical object on the firewall on the passenger side (right side) of the car. Is this the fuel pump? Noticed no performance difference, but the whine was VERY loud.

Where is the alternator located in the 93? When I heard a whine like that it was the impending death knell of the alternator...

(Might check belt as well...)

The object you describe is probably the in line fuel filter before it goes into the fuel rail. The main and secondary fuel pump is in the right tank well. The alternator is located just below the fuel filter near the A/C compressor.

The next time it develops put a piece of fuel line against the right fuel tank and listen. The whine started for me in the same manner. At first after a few hours of driving, then it developed sooner and sooner. Finally the whine was present at startup and I started seeing a serious drop in performance at wide open throttle.
I replaced the fuel pump and have been a happy camper since.
