Hi, me again with 2 more questions regarding a vehicle I have put a deposit on but don't own yet

Firstly, what should the idle speed be when the engine is nice and warm (ie: 30+ mins of driving)? This particular car was settling at 1500rpm.

And secondly, the boost gauge didn't go further than vertical (about 1/2 bar I think). Could this be a stuck waste gate as 'superdave' mentioned in one of the previous posts or is this normal? One more bit of info - the car has covered 59k miles and as far as I could see from documentation hadn't had the chargecooler pump impeller replaced. Could this have an effect on the amount of boost created? This is being replaced next week.

Many thanks again for your help.

Hi Jason,

1500 RPM is a bit high for idle but it's probably caused by a sticking relay and isn't anything expensive to worry about

The max boost for an SE is 0.6 bar, I think.

The chargecooler impeler definately needs changing and will restrict your boost once the coolant gets warm.

One way to check it's pumping ok is to go out for a blast & then stop and feel the temperature of the chargecooler, it should be ambient

Cheers,

I think .6 is what a non intercooled car runs at.
.85 for an SE
1 bar for S4s.

The Chargecooler impeller is gone in a Esprit with that many miles if it has not been done recently.

Many times around 30K or so.

The impeller will look like a rubber knob as all the vanes will have snapped off.

My idle is about 1050 or a little over 1K on the tach.

Sometimes if the car had learned to use low grade fuel then switched to premium or higher octane fuel it will idle fast and run in a rich mode. Try resetting the ECU by cutting power to it.

Jason,

Don't know which area of Bucks you are in, if you are down towards High Wycombe and you wish to compare with another 89 SE give me a email offline. I based near Watlington just of the M40 between High Wycombe and Oxford.

Mine is stock as far as I know with 41k on the clock.

Hi,

Many thanks to everyone for your responses. Looking at the online catalogue for the 89SE, it should produce 12.4 psi which is 0.89 bar (so mine is a little low). But you think the worn out impeller could affect this? Thanks for the info on this - it is being replaced next week.

John, which relay do you refer to when you say it could be stuck?

Calvin, the suggestion of resetting the ECU sounds promising.

Dictys, that is a very kind offer - thank you. I have e-mailed you offline.

A few things can limit boost with a car with your mileage. Cat matrix breaking down and clogging the muffler. EBPV stuck or not working. Turbo boost transducer malfunction giving a false reading on the gauge, wastegate stuck open.

A hot chargecooler can limit boost but on my SE will spike up past 1 bar then back down to a lower boost.

A cracked turbine housing or wastegate seat in the turbo, exhaust manifold crack can also limit boost. A bad chargecooler pump will only limit boost after the intake air heats up, so you should see full boost at least briefly. Unless it's just a sticky EBPV, whatever ails this particular car is unlikely to be inexpensive to fix.
