Types of Esprit Owners
Discussion
1. The "I will make this my daily driver if it kills me." He's the guy who drives his car to work, to the supermarket, to Home Depot -- and finds a way to haul back those 10 5lb bags of concrete. He's going to drive the Esprit everywhere he can just to prove it CAN be done. And, like everything else in life, the truth is somewhere in the middle. You can drive the car, a lot. It's just going to cost you more than a Honda.
Type 1s are typically handy with tools, man's man and are pretty easy on the car -- except for the occasional track day and that empty road that is as addictive as crack in an Esprit.
Type 2. The "I'm putting my baby in the garage and only driving [insert ridiculously low number here] miles per year" guy. This guy's desk is immaculate. His garage is better organized than his wife's shoe closet. The Esprit is beautiful, flawless, and perfectly original. In the back of his mind, he's convinced himself the Esprit is a better investment than Microsoft stock in 1985. Strangely, his repair and running bills are not far off Type 1's.
Type 3. The racer boy. This guy, usually in his 20s or 30s, saw the Esprit as the ultimate X-machine. Kick ass, dude. It fills his garage with his wave runner, his skateboard, his snowboard, and his upside down, handcuffed sex swing. He drives the car hard, REAL hard, trying to keep up with his buddy's 500 hp Triple Turbo Supra. He's always looking for ways to get "5 more at the wheels," and scratches his head when slapped with the $$$$ bill for a blown head, turbo or torn up tranny. He could easily go from Esprit lover to hater, but unlike most of his age he's strangely dedicated to the Esprit and always finds a way to get it running again/pay the speeding ticket/find a new insurance company.
Type 4. The "Wow it's a cheap supercar!" guy was looking for something sporty, maybe a Miata, or one of those Eclipse things. Then, he realized he could get a $30k "supercar" -- and bought the first one he came across. $3,000 in bills in the first six months, and he trades it at a lost for a truck.
My guess? A little of all of the above in each of us, just different mixes.

Hmm.. well let's see. I am somewhat handy with tools and do all of my own work so I guess I am part type 1. I do keep my Esprit in the garage and try to keep her as clean and nice as possible so I have a little of type 2 as well. I am somewhat of a "racer boy" as I have a 450HP DSM which is my street/strip car and do see the Lotus as the ultimate car (been my dream car since I knew about cars) so I am a little type 3. Finally, because the Lotus is an affordable supercar I am able to own one so type 4, you got me.
However, while I have traits from each of the types you listed, I am gonna put myself into another category.
Type 5. Someone who has a love for cars and whose dream car is the Lotus Esprit. This type loves to work on their car, whether it be to detail it or mechanically maintain it and even moreso, loves driving it. While they want it to look beuatiful and keep it in a garage for protection, they know it is meant to be driven and therefore take it out and drive it whenever possible. Type 5 is more outgoing and in turn look forward to meeting other Esprit owners and/or car enthusiasts.
Type 5 is pretty much the category I fit into.

I guess I am close to a type 5.
Except at 47 I still use customized skateboards and snowboards. Can't use high performace surfboards or sailboats where I live now so I have given up on those. My kids think the old man is okay as I hold my own at the skateboard ramps and snowboard terrain parks. Just a need for speed and turns.
