No Joy on 1992 SE Vacuum pump .
Discussion
Hi Jim & Co .
I`m still struggling ( along with several others) to get hold of a replacement electric vacuum pump , that operates the heater control & engine management on my SE .
We rang NAPA , but their "sales" didn`t list the direct replacement part no` #64-1006 .
Hence do you have any other ideas ? - England is far too cold without a heater ; ) .
Many thanks Paul.

Yes my local lotus specialist has just located one this afternoon for one of his costumers.
The original one is a GM/ Hella one.
I also have some details of a US guy who located one from NAPA but you've already tried them.
If i get the vacuum pump part number I will pass it on.
Cheers,
Dave Walters

Cheers Dave ,
I`ll keep my fingers crossed that you get the part number - your local specialist wouldn`t happen to be the one who is trying to source one for me ?
I know of two other faulty pumps - I think they are at an age now where there will be many more giving up...so let`s hope for a result .
Many thanks so far , Paul .

Paul,
The vacuum pump info I gave you is correct. Follow this link to www.napaonline.com to purchase. Happy Motoring!...Jim'85TE

Thanks Jim ,
We will try again - we weren`t convinced the sales rep`s knew what they were doing
.
Do you know what spec` the pump is etc.,(the web page doesn`t give details)....and presumably you have had first hand experience of it`s successful direct replacement ( I guess , apart from remounting , we simply plug/plumb and go ) ?
My old pump is mounted , unorthodoxically , next to the battery on the boot floor (probably due to it having been a Lotus development car for the first 3 years of it`s life )- is this an issue , or should it be remounted somewhere else ??
Many Thanks again ,
Paul.

Paul,
The vacuum pump is a direct replacement and has been on my car for two years now. I'm not certain how yours is mounted as it is a belt driven pump.
Here in the states, the electrical vac pump wasn't introduced until the 93.5 model year, but yours may be electric as it doesn't have a power take off anywhere near the battery, do you have power steering? Happy Motoring!... Jim'85TE

FYI, the GM part number for the vacuum pump on my S4S is 10098493 (fits/works fine). There is a GM parts website that carries it if your still in the market for one...see: www.gmpartsdirect.com
The $250 list price they quote is the same as my local Chevy dealer. I paid $170 w/shipping. I have no ideal what the Lotus dealer price is, but you know it's not going to be any less!
Also, mine is located in the compartment just behind the header tank(s) for the cooling system and is enclosed in foam to try and dampen the sound. The 88's have their electronics located in that compartment, and Lotus apparently stuck the vacuum pump there when they got rid of the mechanical pump and replaced the electronics w/the GM ECU.

Hi Guys ,
Thanks for all the information !
I think my "SE" has led me slightly astray.....as it was evolved by Lotus for the introduction of the S4 ( hence it has power steering and an electric vacuum pump and other things , like electric bonnet & boot releases ), so Jim`s pump is no good for me ( unless converted to belt driven ).
It`s funny ( I still can`t believe it ), I always wanted a White SE Highwing but naturally preferred the mechanics/trim of an S4 - and look what popped up for my 40th birthday - the Lotus Development Car !
However , it does have a habit of tripping me up on it`s non standard spec`(one guy at Lotus even said they should never have sold it , as it just confuses the service departments ), but I can live with that
.
So , I`m still without an electric vacuum pump .
Any more ideas..and I`m really not sure where it`s supposed to be mounted on my "model" ?
Many , many thanks ,
Paul.

Paul it appears we are looking for the part for the same car. Yours is the white high wing that you bought from Steve Hodgson, that's been sitting in PNM is it?
If so, it appears Pete may have found a pump for you in this country.
Nice looking car. Glad you got rid of those blus side repeaters.
Where about are you located in the Uk? Iam about 5 minutes away from PNM.
Cheers,
Dave Walters

Hi Dave ,
Good news !!
As you say , Pete has located a UK alternative ( I`ve just spoken to him ) and Bill was right for the original black plastic GM one ( 2 results in one day ! ) - I`m looking forward to a warm Esprit soon
.
Yes , that`s my baby at PNM...it is having a good going thru`...I`ve known of Pete since the 80s with my little Elan...so entrust the car entirely to him...and one of the priority tasks was to put clear indicator lenses on , along with a brake upgrade etc
- do they look o.k ?
I live in Retford , near Sherwood Forest and yes I did buy the car off Steve , who was looking for a V8 - I guess you know him ?
My email is paul-lister@southlawn.net - you might be able to tell me more about my car than I know - I haven`t seen it in a while
.
Thanks to everyone ,
Paul.

Hey Esprit Novice!
Just read your post and you say you are from Retford? I grew up in Walesby (near Ollerton and Mansfield) and used to spend much of my time in Retford. Moved to Arizona about 13 years ago. My familly still live in Walesby. Small world.
I'll be back in the UK on business in April, perhaps I could take a look at your Loti?
