If some took a Lotus Esprit GT3 from Europe,
installed a Honda 2.2 liter so it would be smog legal
in the USA.
What other transmissions would be avaiable for use
by the Lotus besides the renault ?

I think the elise/exige conversions to use the honda engine keep the honda trans too? Might be wrong. The big difference between putting a honda engine in esprit vs elise is that the esprit has an in-line engine, whereas elise/exige is transverse.

Fitting a honda transversely keeping the honda trans = huge effort. Fitting it in-line and mating to renault trans= big effort also

Cheapest solution? Buy an S4 or S4s. You can fit some lightweight seats and make it GT3-ish.

If you are serious, check out the kit car industry for ideas.

The Renault is popular because of its arrangement. The only Japanese one that springs to mind is the Subaru. Perhaps you can find a FWD USA car that has the same arrangement.
