I took my turbo into the shop for a T4 compressor fan upgrade. The shop tech thinks that the T4 compressor is going to have a 3" intake flange on it. Of course, we will find out for sure eventually. The problem is that the current flange on the T3 compressor is 2-1/4" O.D., and the hose leading from the air cleaner is 2-1/4" I.D.

Do I need to come up with a reducer/increaser?
Is there a larger hose available, or maybe an S4S part available?
Does the T4 come with intake flange options?

Any advise on how to best fit the intake hose is welcome.

Thanks...Walt '91 SE

Yes, you'll have to come up with something. I just put a T04E-50 trim and the intake to the compressor is either 2.75 or 3". See here:

You guys will have some other things to deal with if you used a regualr T04E like I did.

At any rate the stock Lotus hose IS NOT going to enlarge over this for you. No way in hell. I fought with mine for an hour and finally gave up. The hose that Lotus uses for the intake is very specific and its construction is a lot like a heater hose - it doesn't budge.

So, what to use?

You can find couplers at hardware stores in the plumbing section. 3-4", 3-3", etc. So, you could step it down to the Lotus hose if you wanted.

Or, you can do what I did - use a drier vent hose. The fellows at Turbonetics do it on their drag cars but after having done it I don't think it is such a good idea. I'm going to replace it with something but space is TIGHT down there. I might do a 3-3" coupler into a 3" steel pipe and then over to the air box and use a coupler there. I think I'm going to make the pipe by sawing up some 3" pipe I have here and welding the pieces together but it'll be a pain in the ass due to the way it needs to go.

I thought about the S4s hose to but it only uses a 60 series T3 which is not nearly as large as the T4 turbo so the hose won't help, if you could even get one.

Alright, here is what I've found that will do the job.

Go get a 3" band coupler for coupling two 3" pipes together. Take your existing air hose and notice how it has a foam protecting piece...ah hell, look at these pictures, the latest ones:

In the second picture you can see how I used some of the outside foam to pad the inside of the 3" clamp so that it will clamp down properly on the turbo inlet.

That should tell you what you need.

Hey Ron, are you done with the upgrade now? I am still planning to take a drive up and check it out.
