Need advice on 94 S4 purchase
Discussion
I have been looking to purchase an Esprit for a few years, and one has come along at a relatively fair price.....I think. The car I am considering has 70,000 miles on the clock. The turbo has just gone, and will need to be replaced. Other than needing this repair, the car has well documented history and appears to be in good condition otherwise. My question is, should a 70,000 mile car worry me? How long are these engines, and transmissions good for before major work? Any help would be appreciated, as I want to justify the purchase price against the turbo repair and any anticipated future repairs.
Thanks in advance.

Renn,
Unless your getting the car for under 20k I'd walk away from a car with that many miles and needing a turbo. Not saying that the car couldn't possibly go 100k+ miles with the right service, but at the cost of a turbo replacement, and the fact that there are so many low mile cars to be had, why buy a "high miler".

I love you guys. 70K miles on a 10 year old car is a high mileage car. I will take a driven car over a non-driver any day as long as the condition is good.
When I bought my 94 it had 53K on the clock and everyone told me to steer clear of the car, that it had too many miles and too many repairs. I am glad I didn't listen as I love my car, has been great to me and is a perfect driver. However, I gave it a real good looking and testing before handing over the cash. And that is what I recommend to you. If the turbo is the only thing wrong with it, it is worth it for around 20K. Does it need a timing belt/C service? Tires? Brakes? Cooling? AC? Heat? Any issues whatsoever? Check it all. Most importantly, do a compression test at the least and a leakdown test if possible. A turbo repplacement isn't that bad and if you can install it yourself, even cheaper. Get an upgraded turbo from WC Engineering for $1500. Even if you have to pay for the install, if it needs nothing else, I can't stress that enough, it is worth it.
