I feel very foolish posting this question...My son stopped by the other day and as we were admiring my new toy, he said " Hey dad, what does the CBAC on the badge stand for?" I didn't have a clue. Colin Chapmam and something I suppose. He left in shame. Help me out, guys.

Hi,
To show your son how smart you are, tell him that the initials stand for Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman, the founder of Lotus. Further, tell him that the triangular medallion is the stylized representation of a petal from the Lotus Flower, that'll really impress him. Happy Motoring!... Jim'85TE

Ernest,
Ooops on me :0 ! I was actually on the phone with a friend Brian Englund when I was replying to the post, guess my multi-tasking skills ain't what they used to be! Of course, you are correct, it is Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman 1928-1982 R.I.P. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE

Hey Jim,
Why don't you go ahead and tell him the story of the lotus flower........I like that one.
Jim,
It's the legend of the Lotus Eaters and I believe that Ernest placed it in the FAQ.
BTW, I found an old Elite ad from the early '60s that refers to this ancient legend (known since Roman times). Happy Motoring!... Jim'85TE
Dave,
Just another trivia tidbit to pass on to your son. Not all Lotus cars bear the standard Yellow/Green Bonnet Medallion.
Several times in Lotus' 56 year history, Lotus chose to memorialize the passing of individuals who contributed significantly to that history.
In tribute to these men, a special Silver on Black medallion was produced and installed on all Lotus cars during that period.
I'm not sure I know them all, but the passing of the great Gran Prix Champion, Jim Clark was memorialized by this medallion on all cars produced in 1968 and '69. I know there are others, perhaps someone will chime in here, Ayrnton Senna maybe?.
The passing of Colin Chapman in 1982 was memorialized by a special Gold on Black medallion. He died in late 1982 (Dec.), so the badge didn't show up on production cars until '84. The significance of his passing was so great, Lotus issued this medallion through the '85 model year. My '85 Esprit came standard with this medallion. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE

Kato,
Interesting insight. When you state "Any Lotus street car that was manufactured after 1968,
that is not wearing a black nose badge is pretending to be something that it is not !", I'm not sure my experience corroborates this.
I have seen too many new Esprits in showrooms, and spoken to too many original owners with the standard Green/Yellow medallions to agree with this statement. Additionally, upon checking my '83-'87 Parts List, it lists the standard medallion as well (Lotus Part # A089U1550F).
I know this is a very gray area for Lotus as they frequently issued medallions until the supply was used up.
For instance, the '83-'87 Parts List Plate #12.05A notes a 'New' style medallion for the 1985 MY Turbo onward. Additionally, it notes a change to the side pin stripping which my car does have, but, my '85 MY Turbo (confirmed by both VIN and engine number) has the 'Old' style circular Black on Gold medallion which I know absolutely to be original (I have a photo of the only other owner (buyer) picking the car up at the dealership in Little Rock and the 'Old' Style medallion is clearly visible. Can you disclose your source for your assertion? Maybe you need to revise this. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE
