Just rec'd shipment of Redline MT-90 which I heard so many good things about, for my 87 turbo transmission. However, reading bottle, says it is a "GL-4" oil---I thought the esprit required a "GL-5" oil?? Help fast, I was going to change my tranny oil this afternoon. Thanks.

I'm currently talking to a gearbox specialist about the Esprit box. I'll post the info on transmission oil here as soon as I get it. Apparently the oil in the box can reach 120°c, so you really need the right stuff.

There'll be a lubricants page coming soon on LEW.

Hi,

Go ahead and use it. It'll be fine. MT90 wasn't around when Lotus published their spec. Hundreds of Esprit owners use and swear by it, including me. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE

Citroën recommended only GL 4.
You have the same box so Redline MT 90 is perfect.

OK --- I put the MT90 in. Just have a few miles, but seems to be working very well. BUT, CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW MANY QUARTS IN AN 87 TURBO (CITREON TRANS.)?
I thought 3.2, but overflow hole began pouring out at appr. 2 quarts. I believe I had it drained sufficiently (barely a drip of the old). If I put more than the appr. 2 quarts, trans. oil will drip out of the speedometer connection. Advice?

I have a Renault box, but from what I have read on the Citroen boxes (and I am sure Jim will chime in) you have to fill it, then wait a good long time, then add some more as the 5th gear part fills very slowly. If you don't wait and fill it some more, you will be running it too low.

Doc,

Good Call! Yes, the 5th gear on the Citroen C and C-35 gearbox lives in an extension housing attached to the rear of the case.

There is no provision for the gear oil to enter or be drained from this housing on the C-35 box (post '84-88).

The gear oil must migrate through the main ball bearing, between the balls. This means that it takes considerable time for fluid to migrate into/out of this extension. Consequently, many owners are unknowingly driving with partially filled gearboxes.

When draining, it is helpful after the fluid stops dripping, to raise the rear of the car to make sure all the fluid drains from the housing.

When filling, you need to fill 'til the overflow drips, replace the plug and wait at least 20 minutes for the fluid to migrate into the rear housing. Then you pull the overflow plug and add more fluid, 'til you get the required quantity into the box.

The capacity of the box is 2.25 litres or 4.8 US pints. If you didn't get that quantity into the box, you either failed to fully drain it, or allow the fluid to migrate into the rear housing. Hope this helps. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE
