I was looking through the receipts from the PO of my '83 TE and I noticed an Aluminum Flywheel kit. Is this an OEM part?

Hi,

No, it is an aftermarket part, and as I understand it no longer available. May add a slight performance edge, but was mostly sought as a cheaper alternative to the $1200 stock flywheel.

These often needed replacing if the clutch had been slipping, because it would super heat, and consequently temper the flywheel so it could not be refaced. An indication of this is a bluiing of the face, the flywheel, but maybe the owner as well. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE

I believe they still make one for your car, not sure though.

I have a Fidanza flywheel on my 4AGE 20 valve. The clutch face is replaceable, so if you toast it, they can replace it without selling you a whole new flywheel.

Doc,

That's who used to do the alloy flywheels for the Esprit, but last I heard (6 mos. ago), they discontinued it, telling a friend of mine that he got the last one. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE

I dunno Jim, I think they will make one-off's, so if they have the dimentions for an Esprit flywheel I bet they would make one. Might have been the last one in stock. I bought mine through a group purchase, and it was the first time they made 4AGE flywheels. We had to send them an OEM unit to duplicate.

Doc,

You're probably right. It doesn't take much for such a shop to produce a one-off, but they are sure to gouge you for set-up and such on a limited quantity.

It may be that they have stopped keeping it as a stock item. I inquired and was turned away, but I did not pursue the possibility of a one-off, primarily because of the perceived cost. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE
