New front brakes for 93.5???
Discussion
Hey all - This is a prob I have been having for the past few weeks...
I can eventually stop the car, BUT, if I stand on the brakes much more or have to stop any quicker, I am going to be looking like Fred Flintstone!
I pretty much knew when I got the car that the pads needed to be replaced. After closer inspection of the rotors, I feel safe in assuming that they need to be replaced as well.
I need some recommendations on new rotors and pads. From what I have read here, I already intend to replace the brake lines with SS. Also, keep in mind that for the most part, I do light driving. No tracking, and nothing over 100mph unless I have plenty of room to slow down.
Not really knowing what the stock brakes perform like, I am not sure if I need to upgrade or keep it original.
Basically, my 3/4 ton diesel truck stops better than my Lotus, and I am extremely nervous in traffic cause I never know if the car will be able to stop as quick as the idiots around me...
Any help with vendors, pricing, and options would be much appreciated.
Thanks - Mike

Mike:
I run the CarboTech (www.CarboTechEng.com) pads on my Esprit. Since you aren't tracking the car use their Bobcat compound. Talk to Matt Huggins at Carbotech.
If you need new rotors call Jeff at JAE (www.JAEParts.com) bu task him to get the rotors slotted (if possible). If he can't get them slotted, CarboTech can do it for you.
Try a good brake fluid, I use ATE Super Blue, as well.

Carbotech makes good stuff, problem is they don't have anything for the SE's brakes. I went with EBC Greenstuffs as a result because I could go ahead and order them, and am very disappointed. Crappy pad.
I'm going to send the Carbotech guys the pads I pulled off the car to use as a model for 93.5 pads. I was going to do that in a few months, but could be convinced to order a set now if you are interested as well.

Will ship to the US. Should be around £600 including pads, which is around $1100 at the current exchange rate!

I've just fitted the Hi-Spec kit last week. Iam more confident with the new set up. I opted for bog standard pads for now to see what they are like. Have to say Iam more than pleased.
The only negative point I would say to anyone performing any type of brake upgrade on an SE or one with ABS, is that the lack of feedback through the brake pedal doesn't go away. With the crappy accumulator, you still have a dead feel.
Cheers,

Hi Dave you should really uprate your pads at some stage to compliment your new set-up, you will notice a huge difference again. A lot has to do with the pads you are running as well. But if your not doing sprints or just hooning around town don't worry about it. I uprated my pads only to some very serious metal resin compound ones and made braking a pleasure, infact I cant out brake them if that makes sense, note this is only for stock celica brake set up no ABS. Better fluids with a higher boiling point too is to be considered.
Don't get me wrong I am a complete novis at this game but have had the experience with trying out a few pads under extreme track conditions and std pads are just plain dangerous, easily become spongy, serious fade, no feel. EBC Green stuff ever so slightly better but still fade and no real bite. I have Mintex ones now and provides me everything I need for now. I would love to get a high spec brake set-up too but will wait till I get bigger wheels to stuff some larger gear in there.
Dave have you got some pics of your new set-up, show us pls
