Rpm from 1st to 2nd gear

I would like to take a pole:

At what rpm do you shift from 1st to 2nd gear?

It appears in my car anything over 4500rpm and the 1st to 2nd shift is "harder" sometimes even grinds a little. If under 4500rpm it shifts normal.

Does anyone else have this problem? I only have 5500 miles on the car and it is still under warranty. The 6K-mile service is coming up, should I tell the dealer to check out anything specific, other than the transaxle fluid?

I have no problems at higher RPMs as you describe. In answer to your poll: I either shift at 2900 if I'm driving through a neighborhood--right before the serious turbo kick--or at about 5000 if I'm in the mood to play.

Joey - the esprit gearbox is right on its limits for the v8, and the second gear syncro is a known weak spot. If you take your time (allow the syncro to do its work) then you won't have a crunch. Alternatively, change sooner (lower revs) on the 1st/2nd change. I don't really see the point of giving it full bananas in first - it normally only means wheel spin - get into second earlier then then give it the full whack

I guess I need to change my shifting from 1st to 2nd and go a little slower. Still getting used to the Esprit. My S2000 had the Honda 6 speed and was the best tranny I have seen. Extremely smooth, I wish I could install on in the Esprit. But I don’t miss the S2000 at all and will not give up the Lotus.
