Adding Gear box Fluid

I am quite sure I have to add fluid to my 1995 S4s' gear box. I read in another message that the area is in the rear through the trunk under the carpet. I removed the main piece of carpet that is easiliy removed, but it appears that the other pieces of carpet will have to be removed by peeling from the glued areas. Is there an easier way to add the gear fluid? It is suppose to be a beautiful weekend here in Pennsylvania and I would love to get the car out. I had noticed it had been leaking for quite some time, and I am sure it is now too low as shifting has become impossible. Thanks for anyone's help & have a great weekend.

The instructions for filling the box through a hole in the boot(trunk) floor is for older Esrits with the Citroen box.
The filler for the later Renault box is on the left hand side, looking from the rear of the car, about in the middle.
It's a square plug sticking out horizontally & needs a good, tight fitting spanner to undo as it'll probably be rock solid.
Make sure you've got the right one, I'd suggest you get yourself a manual.
I'd also suggest that if you're having problems changing gear then the problem is probably with the clutch or selector cables.

I will give it a try. I did have a new clutch put in about 8,000 miles ago, so I am hoping it is not that. One strange thing though, I am able to move the shifter through the gears, when pressing the clutch while the car is not running. Once it is running the shifter will not move through the gears. Anyway, thank you very much for the info.

Your clutch is dragging (not disengaging). Changing/adding gear box oil will not help you with that. Perhaps adjusting the clutch per the book will, or bleeding the clutch might, and would certainly be something to do before pulling the gearbox.
To get the plug out, you need a 10mm square socket, available from Snap-On, Sears and some others. I made one from a 3/8" drive socket by dremeling out a little bit more until it just fit. I refilled my Renault box by laying under the car, pushing a hose into the filler hole while the wife held the gear oil bottle with the other end of the hose attached through the access hole in the bottom of the boot. 3.15 quarts.

I had a little problem with my 1994 S4. During 1 and 2 gear it started to make odd sounds. Changed the oil through left side of gearbox (the drain plug was allmost stuck!) Be careful so you don't brake it... And the noice dissapeared after oilchange. But I still got slippery cluch in hi torque ranges after a little while. Needs to adjust it with a 19mm on the cluch adjuster underneath your car. Turn it counter clockwise to tighten it(looking forward.)
