Ever since I bought my S4 with 20k on it, it makes a 1 second squeel right after I let off the key during startup. It sounds like the starter. It has no problems starting at all. If I drive the car awhile, then start it up again, the noise is not there. Anyone experience that or have a clue? I am replacing the clutch next week and thought it may be a good time to look at the starter.

probably is sticking and not releasing right away. Lube it and it will most likely go away.

Could be the alternator belt. The alternator is loaded up because it is recharging the battery from the starting effort.

Make sure it is tight enough and in good order.

As Calvin said, Sticking starter pinion in the ring-gear.

When the engine gets hot the pinion will be further away from the flywheel and so that's probably why its ok then. You need to lubricate it and maybe also check the pinion gear in case the end of the gears need tidying up a little, its not difficult to do though.

This is quite common on similar UK cars of the time and I've seen it on a few Range Rovers that appear to use the same starter.
