Does anyone think we will ever see Nick Heidfeld's 41.6second hill record at Goodwood being beaten? F1 cars dont get timed anymore and unless a top hillclimber is invited again (eg Groves/Moran) then I cant see it (Graeme Wight Jnr came close a few years ago in his 480hp Gould V6). Justin Law always produces sub-50 seconds and a few others sneak below that, but thats it.

I'd have to agree that it's now looking unlikely, which is a shame. I'm just glad I was there when Nick set his record time. I was in front of the grandstand opposite the paddock, and he came past at over 140mph just a few feet away.

Yes, he did a 44.40 on Sunday in the Jaguar XJR8/9.

The F1 cars have been banned from setting times since there was a massive accident which killed the driver of the car and a marshall, and severley injured a second marshall at the finish line. The Driver was a guy called John Dawson Damer he was driving a Lotus in 2000.

I didn't know that was the reasoning behind the timing ban on F1 cars - it hardly seems any more dasngerous than a twenty plus year old Jaguar Le Mans car weighing, what, twice as much as an F1 car, being taken up the hill flat out (as impressive a spectacle as it was)?

Not true dude... The F1 cars would be very welcome to set a time if they wanted to.. The only cars not permitted to set a time are the supercars as many of them are driven by non-competition licence holders.

What if they did have one, could they have a go then ? Or is it just a blanket rule on Supercars ?

I stand corrected, thanks James. I guess the reason the F1 cars don't set a time is because the teams don't want the drivers to harm themselves. They don't seem to give a toss about wrecking driveshfats and or gearboxes, judging by Timos' display over the weekend though rofl

After the tragic accident in 2000 one of the F1 teams (cant remember which) stopped timed runs for fear of bad publicity if there was an accident, after this all other F1 teams followed suit, so none of them do it now. Alan McNish did an "unofficially" timed run of sub-41secs in his Toyota, in 2001 i think.
Modern hill climb single seaters have around 700hp and one of them would have a good crack at the record with a good driver...if they were invited, heres hoping. And I want to see Rod Millen back again too!

Justin Law only has 2.8 odd seconds to go.I know that is alot but getting close.
I was watching them strip the back end of the Transaxle down on Friday afternoon after a glitch and a bang.

Glad to see it was fixed.Wonder what the problem was.

It's very hard on the gearbox input shafts, clutches and driveshafts at the FOS if the drivers give it some beans, cars like Justin's and other big sportscars tend to do rolling starts these days which helps reliability during the normal racing they now do. You tend to break/wear the transmition weak links at the FOS because of the number of standing starts and the bumps on the hill constantly breaking traction. Post the FOS i'll be replacing the input shaft and clutch from the Can Am car as the shock loading twists the input shaft and the clutch assembly has all the rivets on the clutch plates shaken loose/stretched, thats what 800lbft standing starts tend to do. biggrin

Anyone doing sub 60 seconds is going pretty quick there, it's quite a challenge as the cambers tend to steer the car more than you would realise from spectating, anyone in the mid 50's and below is really flying.
