Im pervious years we've traveled to Goodwood via the M25-A3-A286, and more recently A283 (which is a quieter road) The traffic is always a total mare (an we're on bikes...travelling by car must be hell)

This year we want to take an alternative route...

Oxford-A34 to Winchester
A272 to Petersfield
Through Petersfield (do we really have to drive right through Petersfield? is it a busy town?)
Take B2146 through Hurst
Take B2141 after South Harting
Join A286 through Mid Lavant and onto Goodwood

Anyone else take this route?

That's a good route, you'll need to go through P'field to get to the next road anyway and it's never really that busy.

yes That stretch of the 272 is a popular hooning route for bikers + the road from South Harting into Chichester is quite nice and at the end of it you should arrive from a relatively quiet direction.

Watch out for the Police, the South Harting route is on their list....

As a driving road it's one of the best. Speed wise probably a little slower, can't comment about close to Goodwood though as never been for FoS.

That's the road I take to FoS each year. Quite good for a blat on the way as it's relatively quiet if you go early; some fun twisties as well.

yes

The 272 etc is more fun, but the M27 etc is more straight forward at will pitch you up to Goodwood round the Chichester bypass (that is the way I'll be going from Fareham on Sat) on FOS weekend it is probably pot luck which is the best/quickest/easiest way in....

not been for a few years so not totally sure what it will be like, so our master plan is dive across and grab breakfast there...then start exploring bounce

That's not a bad route and, as Mark says, getting through Petersfield won't take long (it's not exactly a sprawling metropolis!). The only problem you may have is that the roads from Lavant to Goodwood are usually blocked for FoS traffic (access for locals only).

Just to follow up...twas a terrible mistake to take this route!
We left Oxford at around 7:45, headed down the A34 to be met with 'A34 closed at A4' gantry signs just outside Newbury!!
So, we had to filter passed sationary Newbury traffic. Not too bad on bikes, thank god we didn't take the car.
Once back on the A34, all was well until we started getting totally lost around Petersfield.
God knows where we went wrong, but we ended up on the A3 leading towards london...to cut a long story short, we finally got to Goodwood at 11:30. A bit later than expected.

Oh dear frown Not sure why you'd go through Petersfield? Just nip up the A3 northbound for a mile or so to get back on the A272 to Midhurst then down the A286. I come from near Oxford and always do the A34/272 route - only takes 1hr40 and that's in a car. Left at 7am though luckily so missed the A34 closure smile

Almost suggested that but the OP had a route already planned. Pity he got lost through Petersfield, can see how it might happen I guess.
