CBoardman Comp 2010

Hi guys,

As some of my previous threads have stated I've been looking for a bike around the £500 mark.

I went down and they had a 2010 Boardman Comp reduced to £550 (was originally £700).

Would someone who has a better knowledge than me (probably 99% of people reading this!) have a quick read through the spec sheet and point out anything which is potentially a weak point / rubbish part???

Cool!!

Well the whole Halfords network only have 1 left which was a display model so it has a couple of very minor scratches and it happens to be in the Halfords down the road to me!

I'm not bothered about the cosmetics so much as it's going to get scuffs n scrapes!

I'd quite like to run it for a while and then strip it down and get it sprayed white... something about white bikes (my other bike is a white Specialised Hardrock).

I'm quite excited about getting it now! It's very light and did look a different level to the Sport and Voodoo Hoodoo which I was looking at.

Get it bought and i mean first thing tomorrow before someone else does. Absolute bloody steal with no weak points really.

I've reserved it! They've got to order a new front brake and set it up and bleed the rear brake. Hopefully pick it up one night this week! They gave me £45 to spend on accessories and chucked in some alloy platform pedals as buying from in store means you don't get pedals apparently!?

Really nice guy who helped me a lot at Halfords though. I was impressed!

I bought my '10 Boardman in store and it came with pedals. Oh well, they're "thowing them in" anyway, so I don't suppose it matters!

I laughed when he said pedals weren't included!!!

No idea on the pro... I think that's into the £1000 budget and you can get some serious kit for that money!

Had mine for coming on 2 years now, and it is a fantastic package, nothing has failed, and I've done a fair few miles on it (touch wood). Only thing that sucks on it is the standard tyres which are dreadful, get them swapped out straight away for whatever your preference is, running panaracer firexcpro, and they are much better, not really sacrificed any rolling ability, but so much better off road, increased grip in turn in, and more predictable behaviour.

The Conti Speed Kings on the Comp look pathetic... But not sure how much of what riding I'll be doing yet so I'll wait to upgrade them until I've done a few months of riding. I used to like the Tioga DH's but they were awful on road.

Tioga DHs are beyond awful, even compared to Speed Kings which aren't very well thought of TBH!

Get some Maxxis Tyres if you must change them.

Thanks for that... I used to run Tioga DH's as in my circle of friends they were considered the holy grail in 2.3 guise! I never did think that much of them!!!

Could somebody link me to some decent tyres? There's so bloody many it's unreal!

I'll probably be doing a fair bit of cross country as I live on Box Hill and I basically back on to the woods, maybe a few down hill type paths with roads in between... so basically a complete all round bike!!!

Also... could somebody recommend me some decent gloves? I'm looking at the 661 ones on Halfords as I could get them in the £45 they're giving me and then take out the 3 years care plane for £20 (normally £40ish). Not sure if there's any other websites out there offering decent kit for sensible money though.

There's the weak point Juicy 3s are supposedly (I don't know, havent owned any bikes with them) a complete ass to bleed / setup properly

Yes I was told the Tektro's on the other bikes I was looking at were probably more reliable to be honest!

I'll see how I get on with it, hopefully I'll be happy with it but I'm not scared to upgrade bits n pieces, to be honest, I'm trying to research having a colour change as IMO it looks a bit plain!

Avid have a video tutorial on youtube on how to bleed them, bleed kits are £15. You would have to be a massive mong to struggle to service any Avid brake considering the amount of literature they provide. As for setup, they have lever reach adjustment, no setup required?

I have had my FS Pro for 15 months. I don't ride it as much as I should as I road ride too now. Every time I do ride my Pro and the speed and lightness surprise me, as does the quality of the suspension and brakes. The bike is faultless.

The Pro is an amazing bike.

Avids are fine to bleed, i've bled them many times. You do need the correct bleed kit though.

I remember when Tioga 2.3s were the h0oly grail too, I wanted them so bad but their £15 price was out of reach at the time!

As far as modern tyres go I'd stick with the Contis for a while, but if you feel the need to upgrade get some Maxxis ADvantages or Highrollers, can't go too far wrong really. Basically go for a smoother tyre if you ride on dry clay/chalk, a bit more knobbly if you ride on loose stuff and some Panaracer Muds if you're going out in the pouring rain!

I'm currently running Highroller front/ADvantage rear, although I may pop a crossmark on the rear now the trails have got really dry...

In the wet I've got highrollers front and rear, with the back one running the wrong way round for more climbing traction.
