Not sure how much more you'd get for £100 unless you're going 2nd hand and even then, it would be very old 2nd hand if a decent make.

It would probably be wise to tighten everything else on the bike up, save anything else coming loose

It was all tight. The pedal fell off because one the bearing seized, the brakes stopped working because the mounting brackets were wonky, and the handlebar fell off because the clamp it's fixed with has a design fault that means it is bending the metal it clamps on to, meaning it needs regular adjustment. As I said, don't buy a £100 bike...;)

That's not that low a mileage. I do 15 a day on a bike that cost 13 times your expected spend. It racks up quickly enough and over a month that's 280 miles. Bits will fall off over that distance if you buy too cheaply IMO.
I'm assuming you'll be using it over a working week by the way.
Tesco's have a full suspension bike for £70 (plus clubcard points - woop!) at the moment. If they don't have any in stock spend £70 on tin foil and cheese. It probably amounts to the same thing. 
On a serious note do any of your local bike shops have anything second hand chained up outside? At least you'd be fairly certain it was in good mechanical order.

I've just spent £150 on a secondhand road bike. Second hand is all you'll get if you want anything remotely decent. I've done 70 miles, had one puncture so far and crashed it the second time I tried to cycle to work. I will be cycling again tomorrow now that my front wheel has been straightened and my knee is healing up.

Surely a lot of those would be fine. I realise it's poor form within the lycra-clad community to spend less than a grand on a bike, but surely there's something reasonable within that lot.
14 miles is quite a long way on a cheap bike though.

a few decent suggestions there. OP have you considered drop bars/a full on roadie? IME will make a difference to your time to commute that distance, you're more likely to keep at it the less time it takes. Also, if it's very flat round yours, buying or converting to singlespeed/fixed removes a lot of complication, which is valuable at that price range. Secondhand is definitely the way to go IMHO - something that's already lived decades is much more likely to survive the next few years than something new built to the same price, and possible assembled badly. Let us know what you end up with/how you get on

14 miles is not a great deal in isolation but its still 280 miles over a month. A poorly designed bike will fall to bits and hurt your body. Look into the bottom end Trek's, Cannondales etc, dont go near a Halfords special type bike. Loads of people have been put off cycling choosing rubbish, its not worth it for such a small extra outley IMO
