Cheapish fixie

I've been thinking of converting my old 20" Peugeot into a fixie (I know, hipster dickead, sorry) but yesterday had a nose round a Raleigh shop that was part of a big car parts shop I'd spotted going down the road. They had a fixie for £200, so I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them or tips on getting a cheapish fixie, either complete bike or bits to convert my bike.

If your Peugeot has all parts in working order (particularly headset and bottom bracket), then you should be able to just remove the gears (and brakes if you want to go the whole hog) and buy a fixed rear wheel with appropriate gear to suit whatever chainset sprocket you have on the Peugeot.Ta.

That Raleigh looks very reasonable for the money though. Most ones I have seen are obscenely overpriced for the 'victim' market
Personally I'd try to go with the old Pug.
Get onto eBay mate.. I managed to score a 2008 Giant Bowery last year which had basically been bought by an individual, then upgraded a bit (Ultegra brake calipers, Gatorskin tyres) and ridden about 5 times. It was in great condition as you'd expect and I got it for £200. I see Langsters and stuff coming up all the time in your price range and they'll probably last a bit longer than stuff like that Raleigh that seem entirely geared towards the hipster crowd!

If I needed a new SS bike I would pick up a 2010 £250 second hand Langster tomorrow.
Regarding the wheelset - you don't need a new wheelset just buy a conversion kit which changes your rear cassette into one fixed cog.

Otherwise new wheels are going to be say £150 at the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM.

If I needed a new SS bike I would pick up a 2010 £250 second hand Langster tomorrow.

I don't see why these 'cheap' fixies/single speeders are sooooo heavy. That one is over 28lbs.
Flip/flop hub and rim will be £80 max from a decent bike shop. Evilbay would be cheaper for a s/hand one. But a s/s conversion kit would be cheapest option. Although this would not be fixed.
Personally, I'd get a flip lop rear wheel and give both S/speed and Fixed a try and see which you prefer.

Perhaps the easiest thing to do would be to buy something like that Coyote and strip the parts off to put on my frame.

You would be buying a rear hub with 120mm spacing for your frame which most likely has 130mm spacing.
Those do seem like incredibly good value wheels though.

I took the plunge on one of the bikes from Rutland Cycles' eBay shop. Not a bad little bike. Certainly worth the money - although I picked up a cheap and shorter Thomson stem for it over the weekend.
I bought it to use at the OH's in London when I need to pop out for bits.

Bought a 2010 Langster brand new for £350 towards the end of last year. Haven't ridden it yet, need to get the pedals off my roadie and give it the once over with the spanner okgo said:
