So I am still looking for a video, but it's all over cycling forums etc, he went round on his TT bike in 13.35 with an average speed of 29.5 mph

It was on the BBC Sport website but they've taken it down, wouldn't be surprised if it's because his average speed is almost 10mph faster than the speed limit in the park...

That's very true!

Richmond Park was the scene of my first ever overtake of a motorised vehicle (other than milk floats) on the flat with nothing but the car driver's choice of speed dictating said speed. It was a particularly unpleasant lemon yellow Rover 75 1.8 heading towards the Robin Hood gate from the Roehampton end. I was doing 22, and I'd guess he was doing about 17.

...except that the Royal Parks have separate legislation under which cyclists are included in the 20mph speed limit.

I can only dream of REACHING 29.5mph on the flat!!! He's doing that as an AVERAGE?? Awesome.

The only time I overtook a car in similar circs was downhill at 46mph. Nissan Micra, doing approx. 40mph in 50mph limit after pulling out from driveway on the right. Given the road conditions and the dubious ability of my brakes at the time to stop the bike from that speed, I had no real choice but to pass the old duffer. Squeaky bum moment, all the same. Lesson learned in brake set-up and maintenance, too!

Not sure if I could do a lap in that time if I cut accross the middle...

But bikes aren't required by law to be fitted with a speedo so how would you know?

Jeez! my best is about 21 mins, averaging 17 mph and it kills me, need a breather each lap.

cue, cyclist doing 20mph, then Mr Toad getting impatient at being behind a cyclist who then have to speed because they can't bare to be overtaken by a cyclist again...

if they made the limit 25mph maybe even 30mph for bikes, there'd be a lot less conflict, or just ban cars using it as a rat run.

And I bet Cancellara would destroy Millar if he were to go balls out on a lap, or 3 preferably.

Last time I went through the park it was a 30 mph limit. That was a few years ago though. When did they change it?

I think it was 2004 they changed it - along with closing robin hood gate (think they did that in 2002) and putting a speed bump in by pembroke lodge.
