Gear indexing problem.

When indexing my gears, I manage to get the gears running/changing smoothly from the higher gears (small cog) to the lower gears (large cog) on the rear cassette but for some reason they will not do the same in the opposite direction, any ideas what this might be? maybe a kink somewhere in the cable??

Any help much appreciated.

I get exactly this sort of problem too. Changing to larger cogs is perfect, but going the other way I often seem to end up having to click two stops before it changes, at which point it will then change two gears, and I have to go one back in the other direction.

Does this sound like your problem? If so, please post back the answer should you find it elsewhere!

This is one of those jobs that is so easy to sort out when you are there in person, but not quite so easy to explain!

As the gears are changing up the gears i.e. from the smaller sprockets up the block onto the larger ones, your cable is tight enough/

As it wont come back down again, then it is either:

1. Your cable is too tight - slacken the barrel adjuster half a turn until it indexes
2. Your cable is sticking in the outer - put a new inner and outer cable on to prevent 'cable drag'

Do the cable stuff first, the issue is going up to cogs with more teeth on the rear then either the cable isn't tight enough or if that doesn't cure it, check the ramps on your cassette if they are non-existent or very worn in comparison to a new one (look at a picture online), it might be new cassette (& chain) time.

have you sprayed an aerosol lube all over your rear mech? If there is resistance in the spring or pivot points, then when untensioned (moving down to higher gears is normal result of untensioning, although some work the other way), it might not be moving as quickly or conclusively as it should
