-shaped knee brace

during the tour, especially during the second and third week, a few riders were using a y-shaped knee brace, does anyone know what they are and what they are intended to do, i assume they are patella tendon straps but wouldnt mind giving one a try to see if help.

i dont think it was, it was a line that split into a "y" from the top of the shin around the knee cap, i cant imagine tape would be strong enough to support the knee. i'll find a picture later, i think thor wore one for a few days?
