Its been a year since i did anything this daft ( see my thread on riding to Venice ) and i have done very little riding since. When we last did this climb it was en-route to Venice and my city touring bike weighed in excess of 40kg. This time i am doing it on my Specialized Allez so hopefully it will be a lot easier![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
Does anyone have any idea of how long its going to take to climb on a racing bike (i know it takes 5-6 hours fully loaded) and also any tips or hints that can be given? Not sure if this is daft or not so any advice will be great...

21.4 km, ave gradient of 8.something.
Somewhere between 2 and 2.5 hours. Looks quite "challenging".
Edit: ride the first hour easy. Aim to get to halfway feeling that you have gas in the tank. Otherwise it will be miserable.
Find a steady rhythm, stick with it and don't stop. Restarting will be more painful that keeping going.
Drink a lot, but not when you're panting. Breathing is more important. Wait til you're on a less flat section where you can get your breathing and HR under control. Use one bottle of water and one of electrolyte drink. And take something to eat (energy bars).
Ride at your pace. Not anyone else's. Climbing is usually pretty solitary.
