I've had one, used to commute around London on it, awesome fun. Pain in the arse to get up 3 flights of stairs though...

They look like there would be an art to keeping good balance on them, weight would be all on the back of the bike. Are they any harder to ride or just different?

Nothing exceptionally difficult, you need to get used to the excessive trail though.
