Crank removal tools

Are crank removal tools a universal fitting? Or at least will they all fit any shimano cranks?

Just bought a used bike, and prefer to do the work myself. At least I dont have to fight with cotter pins any more! (anyone else remember them?)

I've fitted self removing bolts, cheaper and you *could* get a crank off on a ride should you be so inclined!
