For a long time now I have been meaning to sort my gears out on my bike. I thought it wouldn't be hard to resolve but I am reduced to four useable cogs at the rear and to change gears on the larger cogs requires skill and patience.

Does anyone have an idiots guide to getting my gears back and being able to ride without the fear of gears slipping and causing myself an embarrassing yet serious injury?

I took the leap of faith when I built up a bike last year. Adjusting gears is a daunting task, bit of a black art. But tbh once you've got over your initial fear it's not too bad. Worse case scenario you can always pop into your LBS.
