Advice needed............

At the moment we are a 2 car family but with my daily commute only being 10 miles in total to work AND back i'm thinking of selling my car and cycling it.
I was a keen MTB'r not so long ago but have never really ridden on the road much.
To get me started, what would be a good bike to start with? Could i just put road tyres on my MTB?? Also, what clothing is needed as i'll be cycling in all weathers obviously and i want to get to my Work warm AND dry .
And while we're on the subject of weather........is cycling in the snow during the winter months possible?

An MTB on slicks is what I use to commute on
An old one at that which no self respecting thief would look at
Id like to consider myself pretty hardcore and ride a 'proper' racing bike for fun through all weathers however for getting to work on the rubbish roads round here you cant beat big fat tyres
The main compromise is weather protection/mudguards. I use clip ons which are adequate at best
A real bike like a Kinesis Racelight or Ribble Audax will have full on guards and probably mounts for pannier racks

Clothing is open to much debate
I use a windproof jacket for spring/autumn and something similar but less breathable for the winter
In summer its short sleeves wahey
Legs are the main problem area for the fashion conscious cyclist - baggy MTB type stuff isnt bad and has lots of pockets

Snow - its fine when fresh and lethal after a nights freeze
