Used AM Bike Suggestions...

Chaps.

Not sure weather I can wait two months for canyon to deliver a nearve AM new so thinking of going 2nd hand instead.

Planning to ride north wales and the lakes. For bill and the alps on occasion. Got £1000-1500 to spend.

On the list:

Santacruz Blur LT
Intense Tracer
Whyte 146
Lapieree Spicy

Any other suggestions?

Any suggestions and links appreciated. Where's the best place to look?

There is quite a bit of difference in the geometry there, you need to decide if you want low and slack or not IMHO.

The Lapierre Zesty would seem to be the more matched, 140mm competitor if that is what you are after, rather than a Spicy.

Orange 5 seems the standard answer if trail centers are anything to go by.

I have heard a lot of negative things about the Tracer, including shoddy tolerances and misalignment and cracking of the rear triangle followed up by poor warranty support.

Have you considered a new YT Industries Wicked, another mail order German bike manufacture for 1599 euros

Hmm. I'll have a look into those tracer problems, Cheers for the heads up.

Really hate the way that YT bike looks. Call me a tart but for me the bike has to look as well as it performs

No worries, I would never buy a five for the same reason, I love the look of the Zestys though

I'm curious - and have no experience of full sussers at all - what don't you like about it? Looks great to my childish mind.

It's way to 'busy' for my tastes. The graphics are quite distracting and the anno red wheels look a bit cheesy. Overall it's confusing to look at.

I like a nice strong solid colour with a few carefully chosen graphics

Plus, this is last years model, so you may be able to get one second hand for cheaper! I've no doubt the snobs who buy a new bike every year will be selling theirs ready for the 2012 FivePro...

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't single pivot design a bit old hat these days?

From my own personal experience, I'd go for the Lapierre Spicy.

I own a 2010 Spicy 316 and it's pretty much perfect for what I need it for. So far it's had a week in the Alps (Morzine/Chatel area) and done North Wales, Glentress etc and survived a full uplift day at Innerleithen on Saturday.

I thought it would be difficult going uphills, but its not too bad. I have Fox 36 Talas on the front that I can drop to 110mm which does help. I'm not saying it's as easy as a hardtail to climb on, but it hasn't held me back (being a fat git holds me back more).

It depends entirely on personal riding preferences. I currently ride a Kona Dawg Dee-lux which is multipivot and suits me just fine, but I do like the simpler designs of the single pivot.

You are generally limted with the amount of travel on the rear of a multipivot bike like the LaPierre's, Trek's etc.

Just been up to fort bill and rented. Could see myself going up there a couple of times a year. The lads I go out with go to the alps once a year so I'd like to get on board with that too. They go doing uplifts regularly also.

I'd like to be able to get the thing up hills though. Riding trail centres in north wales and the lakes etc so a modicum of cross country ability is desirable.

I've no idea how this ranks in the grand scheme of freeridey type stuff (I'm a hardtail man at the moment) but this is a mates and its a lovely bike and has barely been used.

Another shout for a Spicy. I've got a 2010 Spicy 216 although slightly specced up (just a tad...) and sounds like it would suit your needs. I bought it as an all-rounder to use for general riding and trail centres, as well as full-on DH. It survived 3 weeks in the Alps (everything from the DH tracks at Chatel to being dragged 90km on the Passportes du Soliel event), to quite a few full days on the world cup DH track at Fort William. I'm generally impressed with it's versatility although it was starting to get out its depth at Fort William although that's not surprising. But then I've just bought a Glory DH to take over those duties! Mine even climbs OK despite a 160mm non-adjustable fork and 34lb all-in weight.

Cove Hustler would fit the bill. Used mine in the alps, around the Welsh trail centres, over Leith Hill and on uplift days. Great bike.

My LBS has discounts on both Zestys and Spicys at the moment. The 2011 Spicy 216 is £1700 and the Zesty 214 is £1440 I think. See link below:
