What sort of shoes are you using?
I use MTB SPDs on my road bike so that I can walk up the smooth concrete ramp from our bike store to the office without looking like a drunken penguin, but it makes finding overshoes something of an issue.
Road overshoes are great so long as it doesn't rain beyond a light drizzle. Any sort of serious rain will see water make its way into your shoes from below within about 5 miles or so, because the overshoes can't seal properly to the sole of the shoe because of the ridges on it.
There are MTB specific overshoes, but these all seem to share both the weight and size of leather biker boots.
I'm saving up for a decent pair of Goretex SPD's, ideally with some sort of elasticated foot opening to stop water running down into it.
