When were drop handlebars first introduced?

They were THE thing to have as a kid in the 70s and wondered when they first emerged?

No good reason for wanting to know, just idle curiousity.

There's pictures in my Tour de France books showing sort of drops being used in the 1920's, not the shape we have today but obviously made to get the rider tucked down a bit.
