Painting a carbon frame

Following my very random decision to enter the Etape next year, I now need to buy a road bike...

I've been offered a nicely spec'd bike, built around an ex-team tour frame which is painted in horrible sponsor colours. The price reflects the appeal, but I'm trying to look past the appearance and buy on quality!

Will I be able to respray the frame at a later stage??

Is it possible to just take it to the bare carbon and put some sort of protective clear coat over the top?

Would look epic.

I think the answer to this is yes and no. Yes it's possible, but no it probably won't look epic. An engineering carbon finish would be very different to a cosmetic one, so if the part was not originally intended to be bare carbon it is unlikely to have the thick resin and careful weave placement that you would find on a cosmetic part.

I guess the only way to do it would be to carefully strip it back and then see whether you'd clearcoat it or re-paint depending on what you find.
