Buying a budget bike... but....
Discussion
I am looking in the new year to buy a bike, dont want to spend very much, couple of hundred tops, I want to use it as a means of shifting some weight, and when I have, exploring the local countryside, (The Look Out, whats left of Swinley Forest etc).
My problem is, I am quite heavy (over 20 stone) and when I sat on a bike on Sunday for the first time in many years, it was very uncomfortable.
Am I better off shifting a few stone first, or do I need to just be choosing in the type of bike / saddle I buy?

20 stone isnt an issue but you'll need to spend about £350 on something that wont put you off cycling for life. Get cycling and watch the weight drop. waiting for the weight to drop off before buying the bike is a bit of a cop-out!
the bike you tried was probably not set up for you and not a good fit, when its all adjusted, you should be comfy. padded shorts and chamois cream....

Thanks Pablo, was not going to sit and just wait for the weight to drop off!, I realise life is not that simple... just wanted to know if I needed to shift some weight BEFORE cycling!the bike you tried was probably not set up for you and not a good fit, when its all adjusted, you should be comfy. padded shorts and chamois cream....

I managed to buy a 'cheap' bike for light exercise which actually got me quite a nice example.
GT Avalanche which does everything I want. Light, easy to use and with disc brakes. I don't think it matters about weight or height issues as I'm 6'4 and very at home on mine.
The only thing I will change next year will be the saddle, but only if I use it more often.

I ride a C.11 year old GT Timberline which was about £350 and it's seen everything from when I was a teenager and had the balls to do jumps to my now steady commute to work. I actually got in to cycling when I was a teenager to drop weight and lost 4 stone over one summer (which i've never put back on). Just F*cking Do It!!GT Avalanche which does everything I want. Maybe the GT thing is a rite of passage. I started off on the road to recovery from my heaviest with a gt avalanche 1.0. Absolute tank of a bike, must have weighed upwards of 15 kilos. Still in my shed actually - I have designs on singlespeeding it but even with rigid forks and a singlespeed setup it would still be a brick.
A workmate has a similar vintage gt timberline and is on the road to fitness with it.
