Just because I'm riding a 20yr old Saracen Eiger Cross and home from our market with a full rucksack of goodies and I'm not in lycra; it doesn't mean I'm not as keen a cyclist as you are.

Just been ignored by a couple of lycra warriors this morning who ignored my greeting. Hell; I was probably doing 25 TTs before they were born!

Lets break this down.

Your bike is not carbon.

You had a rucksack on.

You were not wearing lycra and probably have hairy legs.

I bet you don't even have a campag groupset.

I would have probably spat at you. At the very least you would have got my best Euro sneer.

I bet he was wearing road shoes on his MTB too. Or even maybe ... trainers.

I know the feeling as my 20 year old Claude Butler steel special is greeted with similar derision.

Just think though of the pleasure to be gained by issuing a cheery greeting as you pass a MAMIL on something worth thousands of pounds as they're breathing out of their @rse.

I'm unlikely to burn anyone off Tom, not at 65...

Whilst I was at the market, I was admiring a Claude Butler (real one) the guy had bought it new in 1970 and has ridden it to the Alps and Scandinavia. He rides it every day, and the frame has never had a repair or re-paint. I think it was from the era when Claude Butler made lugless frames, and put cosmetic lugs on as the market thought that a lugless frame wasn't strong enough.

I love mine, it's had a maintenance paint to keep the rust away, but apart from that the frame is still spot on.

As to the age thing, there's a chap in the office in his late fifties with whom I'm scared to go out riding with - his hill climbing ability far exceeds my own!
