is there anything better for the novice than the park tools ts8?

dont want to spend the earth and 90 odd quid looks reasonable-ish for this...

^ What he said.

When I was doing my first wheel build, I put the wheel in the fork, used two zip ties on either side for lateral truing. Then stuck an adjustable spanner on the downtube for radial truing. Very basic but good enough for a well built wheel (still haven't needed to true it after 2 years of riding through London's lovely potholes).

Doesn't compare at all to a proper truing stand, but save that for when you're doing regular wheel builds, and maybe start doing it for money.

Or do what I did and get a job in a bike shop and never buy any expensive tools ever again!

I'm the same as these guys, a proper stand sounds great but if you're only building a pair every year or so then it's not worth the outlay. I build mine in the frame they're going to be used on, I don't use zip ties but leave the brakes in place with the Q/R off to true them up and set the "roundness" against the brake blocks. It's more important to get good quality spoke keys which fit properly & don't wear than splash out on purpose-built jig.
