What do black dashed paths mean on an OS map?

Hi all,

I am looking at a 1:50000 scale OS map of the area around Dunkerry Beacon on Exmoor. There are plenty of bridleways there, but there are also lots of other tracks for which the markings are identical to bridleway markings, except they're black, not red.

Does anyone know what the difference is? The map legend just calls them "path". What I basically want to know is whether I can legally ride my mountain bike on them?

Ahh ok should have read my own link. I would say no then. Stick to known bridleways and byways

Path

Under the 'roads and paths' section of the legend, there is a black dotted line for paths. These denote paths that have been identified by Ordnance Survey, but that are not necessarily rights of way because their status is not defined or known.

I use the ones round here, so long as they look sensible

In other words: they can see it on the aerial photos, but it's not an official one.

Thanks guys. Probably best to give them a miss then! Last thing I want to do is have to add on extra miles to the middle of an off road loop because one of these turns out not to be suitable.

All the highlighted black dashed tracks on this section of map can be ridden. One of them is the High Peak Trail.

Careful there, i hate to think what would happen if you strayed onto batmans private land.
