Not sure where's best so I posted this in pedal powered aswell.

Hello, first post here smile

Basically, the whole story is... i'm 16 and last easter I went on a geography trip with my school to Morocco. Whilst there we visited a small school which we were informed didn't have a toilet.

When we returned to Scotland the teachers were keen to do some fundraising to help the school out with the toilet situation, but nothing ever came of that. So thinking about it the other day, myself and two friends decided we'd like to try and do some fundraising ourselves.

Our plan is to do a sponsored bike ride coast to coast from Stonehaven (near Aberdeen) to (possibly) the Isle of Skye.

So now the question: does anyone here know of anywhere that we could get a 3 seater bike from? Or would we be best to use three single bikes?

Thanks for any advice thumbup

Admirable!

Does such a thing exist? Just use 3 separate bikes - keep you overheads down and raise more money!

i really dont understand the idea of sponsoring someone to do something unhelpful such as running a marathon or climbing a mountain.

why dont people do something useful such as washing cars or cleaning up the street or teaching some skills for sponsorship money. i bet they'd a hell of a lot more money too.

You could work the time needed for the trip & donate the wages plus the ferry fares.

Can't you just buy a toilet? They're only about 50 quid from B&Q.

What a magnificent idea, that one could catch on. Before long we'll be seeing single bikes in all our towns and villages.

Organise a Friday Morning Car Wash AT school, and Demand 100% compliance from all teachers. (The Head should be prepared to Sanction that, as his staff were too lazy to organise anything themselves) followed up by Saturday Car Wash at School. One person (per supermarket) to give out leaflets at door of Local supermarket, contact local paper 2 weeks before, and get them to do a piece.

Do it once a month for a year and get the community service portion of the Gold DoE Award

i think what you are proposing is admirable and the cause is a worthy one but please make sure you do a lot more research before embarking on anything.

as others have said, there are a lot of costs to consider for the propsed cycle ride, i dont know how long your route is but you would need a good deal of back up support, overnight stops, spares, consumables etc and also a means of getting home...

there are companies who can set all this up for you, obviously at a price. someone on pedal powered has a bit of a relationship with one such company and i'm sure they can arrange something at a vastly reduced rate for you wink

so something local might be better, the car wash idea as an example is very good as it negates all these costs and means more money can go to the cause. alternatively if you can get some exercise bikes, see if you can put them in the local shopping centre for the day and set a distance you have to complete, get peopel there with buckets as sponsorship collected in advance. get the radio/tv station there, local bbc stations never have much content so they will be interested.
you get to stay dry, there are no support costs and you have people walking past all day long. do it on a saturday and sunday and you will raise loads...

finally, make sure the school has the means to install a toilet, drainage, water etc? otherwise you might look a bit daft turning up with a nice new loo and nothing to plumb it into!....

Off topic, but how would you feel if your boss told you that you /had/ to let some kids wash your car because it was for charity?

My dad was a teacher and in Enterprise Week one year some kids at his school set up a business washing cars. They meant well, but used washing up liquid and those washing up sponges with the green scouring pads on one side yikes. It cost the school a fair bit in valeting and paint correction...

Thanks for replying everyone.

You've given us a lot to think about. One teacher suggested we would probably be able to get corporate sponsorship which could be an option for costs?
We're also getting back in touch with the tour guide to get some more information about the school regarding water etc.

pablo, your idea of the exercise bikes is one we'll definitely be thinking about doing smile

splodge, that looks like a great project, finish it by summer and you can join us... wink

any more input greatly welcomed smile
