Good-looking hybrid bike?

My GF needs to get a new bike. 95% of its use is likely to be in and around London, but she wants to retain the ability to go on longer rides in the countryside in Lancashire, so has requested gears and tyres that aren't entirely skinny and smooth.
A hybrid is the obvious choice, but for them all looking so... I dunno... spoddy? I'm a MTBer at heart, ride a nice-ish singlespeed around London, and call me a snob if you like, but I look down on people when I see then riding what's obviously a hybrid. Hate the look... not sure if it's the bigger wheels, the (ech) mudguards, the conceptual compromise, or what, but that's how it is.
So what hybrids actually look halfway decent, so as to satisfy the fashionista in her, and not embarrass me as I'm being ever-so-cool (

I've said before that there are different types of hybrids: racing bikes with MTB gears, mtbs with road gears, everything in between.
Just depends what your budget is really.

Cross bike is a good compromise...
get her a cyclo-cross bike. don't worry about the drop handlebars as she would rarely use them in town anyway and using the tops/pods is pretty straightforward, some bikes even have additional brake levers on the top part of the bars. Also means when you get onto roady or flat bits she will be able to destroy you pace wise, which will be good for her self esteem and therefore means more riding for you! Win, win! (plus you don't have to buy a hybrid, which is always good news).
The Viva Bellissimo looks nice and is decently light. Stick on tyres with more tread for the countryside?

It looks just like the kind of hybrid that the OP is trying to avoid.I owned a 2011 Croix De Fer and loved it, wish I hadnt sold it, might get another sometime, great bike.
That Whyte looks cool and I have always loved the Viva bikes, very nice.
The Specialized (Globe) range of bikes look really cool, but not 100% sure if they are classified as Hybrid but they still look retro/funky.
