Yesterday on the commute to the City, there's a hearse and accompanying black limo in a line of cars stopped at red lights.

A few cyclists decide the respecful (and safe) thing to do is to hold back behind the hearse until the lights turn green and we can all file away in order, then overtake the hearse when there is space to do so.

However some disrespectful cyclists (and one moped too) decide their time is more precious than that and decide to weave between the hearse and limo, one jumped on the pavement to get round and one road bike rider even leant on the side of the hearse just because he was too damn lazy to unclip his shoes from his pedals.

You disrespectful scum.

Hmm. I'm waiting for this to turn into a general cyclist bashing thread again. Even though each cyclist is an individual, just like car drivers.

I can't see said cyclists getting any support from anyone in here! Even if it does hold you up for a bit, it's not as though you see a funeral procession every day, is it?

Unless you work next to a crematorium, of course, when it must get just a tad frustrating! hehe

Overtaking a hearse is no big deal imo. I've been in a few precessions now and it'd take some pretty diabolical driving to make me feel more sad or to stop thinking about my dead loved one.

It doesn't show lack of respect either, so long as you pass safely I don't see a problem.

Read the OP again.

Overtaking on the open road, fine. Squeezing through at traffic lights then leaning on the roof of one of the cars, not so much.

This is going to turn into a "hate the dead" thread isn't it?

Overtaking is fine, leaning on a hearse is a bit much tbh...

I don't lean on anything with the exception of lamposts etc, its not my property when its someones car or bus, why should I be touching it?

There is certainly an argument for the other side of the story, wtf are you doing driving a hearse through central london at rush hour? But in general I do agree the manners of some people leave much to be desired.

Why do we feel the need to march dead people through the streets anyway?

What is wrong with a bin liner and a rubbish lorry, unless being used for science dead bodies are uselss.

And they're dead, they do not care.

Or use them as a urinal. At least they'd have a purpose then. It's not controversial at all... promise!

When writing my OP, I feared that thread/incident would get mentioned.

I certainly wouldn't cut in front of a hearse on a bike or in a car but to call those that do scum... really?

OK, the cyclist who leant on the hearse - that was out of order I agree.

Unless he was going to fall over if he didn't?

Leaning on a Hearse (regardless of the situation) isn't going to go down well.

As for overtaking the courtege (sp?) got no problem with that. Relatives are under strict instructions, when I'm deed get there FAST. laugh

Then cremate me and use my ashes to mop up an F1 Oil spill at Silverstone.

(yep Really)

Can't really blame the poor cyclist for wanting to overtake if he was being held up, the hearse was probably going dead slow anyway.

I'm with you. As for mourners getting uptight about it, life's too short, as evidenced by the contents of the box, surely?

I remember once being out on a training run along some fast B-roads, about 12 of us in a bunch, me somewhere in the middle, moving along at about 20mph. We became aware of a number of cars behind us, seemingly unable to pass. We singled out and when the coast was clear ahead the man at the back waved like mad for the lead car to pass. This went on for ages, a couple of miles at least, before various mutterings started. In the end the chap at the back dropped off and turned around giving a "what the fk, come on and pass us" gesture only to realise it was a loaded-up hearse with a cortege following it hehe
