Typical story, coming up to 20 and want to get back into mountain biking, used to really enjoy it in my younger years on a rubbish Saracen.

Looking for a hardtail mountain bike that can be used for everything really, not bothered about its road/commuting ability.
Needs to be able to withstand some abuse but not be too heavy because my scrawny legs won't be able to get up hills! boxedin

I understand i'm not going to get the most amazing machine for my budget but looking to buy either a discounted 2011 bike or second hand machine.
Dont want anything much older than a year or two though because i get a bit OCD about scratches and stone chips silly Although this obviously wouldn't be a deciding factor.

Actually, i definitely want something second hand...the usual...was around 700 new, but ebay for less a few rides later kind of thing.
Much like this which has just ended.

Im 5ft 10 with 34inch inner leg so been looking at frame size 19.

What bikes would fit my bill and should i be searching for on ebay?

Really want hydraulic brakes, decent fork up front and a chainset which isnt going to jump around.
Dont mind upgrading certain parts in the future.

If you're 5'10" you might want to consider something smaller than a 19 depending on what you plan to ride. I'm 6' and had a 19" xc bike, but moved to an 18" when I bought my second hand Orange 5. Easier to move about on technical descents, not as good for climbing, but you pays your money and tale your choice

Just collected today a new 2011 felt 720, RRP £850 paid £499 from Je James.
I was like you looking to buy at a sensible price or secondhand .
Thing is i was nearly at my price above on many auctions,so decided on new.

Many shops have sales on at the mo so there's lots of choice.
Je James have Giant Talon 2 also at £499 as well as plenty of others.

The Felt seems good for the cash, been out for a quick spin tonight.
It's not the lightest thing on earth( mainly fork I think) but it seems well finished with no glaring drops in quality compared to the £2k trek I bought last time.

Looks like a good bit of kit for a good price smile

Regarding the weight, thats what i was expecting for the outset to be honest before i even start looking.

PLEASE let me know how you get on with it! Go for a ride tomorrow aha!

I was in the same boat as you, got into mountain biking in Nov 11, entered a 24 hour race Jan 6th so was super keen to get a bike but for a reasonable budget, I'm a 34inch leg and brought a second hand 2007 19inch Specialized Stumpjumper Expert Comp hardtail for £600 well chuffed with it.

Took the plunge and bought a GT Agressor XCR for £350 with an rrp of £800!

Ex display with a years free servicing.

I know people slag off Halfords but apparently the local one it me is one of the few in the country with the highest level trained mechanics and had a good chat with him and bought with confidence.

This is the bike anyway
