I'm surprised, thought he would use Look pedals or Dura-ace. Do many of the pros use Speedplays?

I switched to Speedplays at the end of last summer and will not be going back. They are totally adjustable, so you can remove all float if need be! (cleats are adjustable - not the platforms).
They are a tad on the expensive side, and take a couple of rides to get the adjustment right, but IMHO worth the investment!

As you can imagine the difference is night and day, much lighter, tighter, infinately more adjustable than the Shimano's. I used to suffer ankle pains on the Shimano's and it didn't matter what adjustments I made I could not cure it. Still suffered a bit with the Speedplays but eventually wound out the float and hey-presto, the pain has gone!
FWIW I feel much more 'in touch' with the bike and feel as if there is a much better power transfer on the Speedplay's - it might just be psychological and a byproduct of spending over £100 on a pair of pedals and cleats!

Interesting. I use some Look KEO 2 Max Carbons, although I'm certain that there isn't any carbon in them! Got some Shimano shoes but can't remember their designation as I've been using them for a while. I just like the look of the Speedplays and will be buying some pukka shoes for my race bike soon and just wondered if I should give it a go or stick with what I know. Maybe I'll ask Sigma if they will let me test them for a weekend.

I would urge you to give them a go. In the pedal world Speedplays are relatively new but becoming more and more popular, they are easy to service and nice and light. The guy's at my LBS (who all compete one way or another) have all converted to Speedplays over the past 12 months and swear by them.
I guess the main difference is that they are an engineered solution, whereas most pedals are a platform and spring. Horses for courses, some people love them - others that I have spoken to think they are on overpriced gimmick! Personally I am more than happy with them and would have to have a bloody good reason to dump them in favour of something else!
