Lapierre Zesty 714 or Orange 5 Pro?
Discussion
Hi all
Sorry another waht bike thread but trying to decide between a Lap 714 or a specced up Orange 5. Orange 5 would have Maxle, Kashima Forks, Reverb etc but 4 of my riding mates have Orange 5`s already. I currently have a 314 Zesty (2010) and love the way they ride.
Budget on both is about £3,600

Totally, totally different bikes imo!
Definately a "ride both and decide". One is sleek, lightweight, tricked up french carbonfest, the other is a heavy, but superbly capable ad robust heavy duty big hit descending device.
Take a long, hard, and honest look at how and what you ride. For the vast majority of people the Zesty will be the more suitable bike, but the "jumps and tricks" downhill image of the 5 swings a lot of people into thinking they need this.
My money went on the Zesty, but tbh £3600 is not enough, as the std fit drive train for 2012 is a bit pony (mines got: Reverb +£250, XTR shifters + £80, XTR cassette +£150, Easton XC70 bars +£100) so you are looking at £4k in all honesty.........
In the ideal world you'd want one of each ;-)

already have a zesty so know how they ride and do like them, just impressed with the engineering of the orange and obviously the spec although the spec of the 714 is fine for me(will just upgrade when they break). Do a real mixture of riding from boring XC to trail centers...no massive downhills but do enjoy the downs so hit them as hard as i can
lappierre spicy if you want something a bit more heavy duty than the zesty?
due to the very different suspension design the single pivot 5 will feel quite a lot different to your horst link zesty.
also, I know im a bit biased as im used to heavy monster DH bikes, but do people really see the 5 as a heavyweight big hitter?
I would say the 5 is lightweight but tough; a hardcore XC bike, certainly not a burly descent machine

Do it have to be one of those two? With that budget I'd go for this:

Was torn between the two myself but went for the 5. Tried it on Whites Level and didn't think it climbed much worse than my current Ghost AMR 5700 which is very much XC based and lighter than the Orange, (I'm not that fit either 6'1" and 17.5 stone!)
The way I see it the harder the climbs the fitter I get and have the benefit of it going down, also won't have to deal with the Lapierre importer who quite frankly are more than useless.
Went for very similar spec on the 5 but with brake upgrade and UST wheels, only downside is Orange's shortage of Kashima RP23's so having ordered my bike on the 1st of Feb won't see it until the end of March.

Had a couple of Orange's now, last was a patriot a few years ago and I bought a 5 pro back end of last year, kashima, maxle, reverb and I love the thing to bits, bought it direct from Orange through a mate who works there, zero problems to date.
Strangely I'm already toying with the new patriot, why I don't know as the 5 does everything I'll every need it to.

I've had both (albeit in 2011 form).
The Zesty I think was better for general riding, the 5 was more fun on the downs. However the 2012 Zesty has been chopped about a bit (shorter stays, lower BB & slacker HA) and near enough now mirrors the 5 in terms of numbers, so maybe the new Zesty is the ticket.
I think I would go for the Stumpy Evo Carbon though
