Am i on the right lines for a decent lightweight (for a full suss) trail bike thats fairly quick across country and climbs well. (given my own limited ability)

if so is one any better than other

From what I read the Giant is a lighter and better all round bike, I'm in the market for a similar sort of bike myself.

I read the Giant is good enough for racing as well.

I looked at both those bikes last year and ended up with a Specialised Stump Jumper Elite which I love! Hope that doesn't throw a spanner in the thought process!

A friend I ride with a lot has a two year old X1, and it seems the perfect all rounder. Light, composed, capapable enough when pushed, and so far has been totally reliable. Job done i reckon !

I'm 2 years and approx 4000miles on with my X1 and I'm still enjoying it. Its very light and pretty stable and once I'd put a droppable seat post on it I'm even happy throwing it down some fairly steep rocky descents (I am a bit of a shandy drinking lightweight I admit). My friend had his X4 stolen last year and he got the Trek instead and on a recent trip around Edale he was really struggling to get any confidence on the bike. He found it really twitchy and regretted not buying another Anthem.
