I need some help and advise here.
I have a Moda Stretto wich has done maybe 1000 miles. Last week while cycling the rear wheel broke off. The hanger has broken through the middle, taking the derrailier and rear wheel with it.
I am being told by the shop that it is due to the rear wheel being loose, but in all honesty whilst I never clmap the wheels so tight i struggle to undo them, the skewers are normally feeling a fair amount of resistance when pushed in.
I have had differing opinions from other riders, some stating that wheels shouldnt come out even if the skewer isnt in the wheel, and the hanger is designed to hold the wheel in place if you are cycling along.
As some of you know,, I am very new and niave when it comes to cycling, so I'd appreciate any thoughts you have.
This is looking at quite a pricey incident, a Sram Force Rear Derralliuer and hanger is over £100.
Luckily the loss of rear end happened at walking pace, I dread to think what would have happened at 40mph downhill.
Unfortunately there are a number of reasons the hanger broke away. Such as a bad link in chain, debris such as stick caught in chain, badly set up rear derailleur that shifted past the largest sprocket and sent the derailleur cage into the spokes, crash damage - for example where the bike has fallen over and landed on rear mech, chain too short and you selected wrong gear combo.
Unless you can clearly show this was a badly manufactured part, the hanger did exactly what it was supposed to and broke away, thus preventing damage to your frame.

Sorry maybe I am missing something you say the hanger broke off and the wheel came off, if the derailleur hanger came off it would damage the wheel but not to the point were it fell out ? or am I missing something.
If it is the seating location of the wheel on the chainstays then it sounds like a frame issue.

Still unhappy tht the thing has broken though, been out on the dolan which is fine, but also had a play in the kitchen and without a skewer the wheels dont fall out

You say the 'rear wheel fell off' so the whole wheel, including the tyre, rim, spokes, casseette and hub just 'fell off', causing the back end of the bike to drag along the ground and you to fall on the floor and seriously damaged the rear mech, the mech hanger, the frame and yourself?! This sounds unlikely.
What probably happened is the rear derailleur/mech got caught in the spokes and twisted round causing the mech hanger to shear off, preventing any major frame damage.
This can be caused by any number of things but is most likely caused by a slightly bent mech hanger causing the mech to catch on the spokes resulting in damage to the mech and the mech hanger. This will have made a lot of noise and possibly locked up the rear wheel.
Unfortunately, this happens. It happened to me a few weeks ago in Wales when my mech, on a previously bent mech hanger from a small brush with a rock, decided to make a bid for freedom and launched itself into the spokes. New mech and mech hanger needed, unlucky but there you go. Good excuse to upgrade to XT 10 speed (highly recommended)
Things to learn: check your mech is straight before every ride, most people bend their mechs when the bike is being stored in a shed or locked up and the mech bashes something as they put it away or get it out.

Any pictures?Just can't see this happening - would you like to hazard a guess at the failure sequence?
There's no way the rear hanger would break mid ride as a prime cause of these events.
As others have suggested, maybe the hanger was bent, or the gears maladjusted and you changed gear into the wheel, but.."the rear wheel broke off" ???

Ok, to ressurect an old thread this has happened again. I'll take pictures this time!
pedalling slowly on a downhill section toward a junction i was changing from the smallest rear cog up three. I was on the large front sprocket.
Hanger just seemer to drag round the round the rear wheel and lodge itself between the wheel and frame.
Shop have said they'll send the bike back to Moda. As I only ever ride with the club riders they know it hasnt been abused, dropped etc..
Funnily, I had a Stretto on loan from the shop for 4 months while they waited for mine to come in and it never had a problem. Maybe I should swap mine for the secondhand one

You need ot be clear what is "derailuer hanger" and what is "Wheel dropout". Unless the wheel WAS incorrectly fastened, it should be impossible for it to "fall off" without 1) Lunching your frame causing it to fall off or 2) having a fairly major incident as a RESULT of it falling off while riding!
This second incident jsut sounds like the stop screws on your rear derailuer are incorrectly adjusted, allowing the chain to over shift in to the gap between sprockets and rear dropout.
