£400 Hybrid

My aunty and cousin are both on the hunt for new bikes for cycling to work. I have suggested cyclecross but I think they both fancy hybrids.
So with a £400 budget (each) what would people recommend. I think second hand is the way forward and as long as it’s in good shape then I cannot see this being an issue.

secondhand is always better for value for money but the sun is out so prices might nudge up a bit (especially on fleabay) and also some people, quite understandbly, just like to have new things so if they arent hard pressed for a bargain, and wouldnt notice the difference between a new £400 bike and a bike that was a bit more a few years ago but is now £400 on the secondhand market, have a lok at Dawes or Ridgeback.

Bikes like the Giant Rapid and Specilaised sirrus would be my secondhand suggestion based on what i see commuters on and reputation.

the thing about hybrids is the top end bikes are only £1k or so whereas the top end road/mtb stuff can be up to £5k thus buyiong a £400 hybrid is nothing like buying a £400 mtb or road bike

I managed to pick up a Specialized Sirrus Sport, which retails for £450, on ebay, in excellent condition for just shy of £190.

I can't massively comment on how it is as a bike as I haven't really used it yet, it was more a bike to cycle to a country pub on in the summer months, so seeing as it isn't the summer yet, I have mainly been using my road bike and MTB.

It was either going to be a Sirrus or A Giant Rapid. The Rapid were few and far between on eBay and a fair amount more £££

Plus I had an n+1 itch that needed to be scratched. I am now in the process of upgrading. The road bike it a bit like triggers broom...

My 2011 scott sportster has been absolutely faultess as a commuter and for general riding, literally nothing has gone wrong with it - I've never even adjusted the gears. I paid £410 but this years equivalent model is about £50 more so a little over budget although you can get lower specced models in the sportster range for about £400.

Mine's a bit like this:
