Heading over to Morzine for Passports in June.

It'll be my first time in the Alps on anything but a DH specific bike. I’ll be riding PDS for one day, but we’ve got 3 other free riding days for general hooning.

I generally only ever use Maxxis Highrollers, they suit my style, they suit the stuff I like to ride, but I also know from bitter experience they're about as useful as tits on a bull when it (inevitably) rains and turns into a mud-fest.

I was planning to get a set of Swampthings, I've used their big brother the Wetscreem on really bad days over there and the mud grip was something to behold, but they're horrible on anything else so I'm a bit concern I'll get up on the day of the event, to rain, head out on the swampthings and it'll be dry and sunny by 10am and I'll be fighting a set of mud tyres around all day..

Any suggestions for a good all-rounder with a wet/mud bias? Needs to be about 26 x 2.2 to 2.4 other than that no restrictions.

I had Panaracer Fire XC Pro's on my hard tail which were pretty dependable and have gone back to them in preference to Highrollers, not too pricey either.

Edited, soz they are only available in 2.1

Further, in discussions with a seasoned MTB'ing mate, he has Racing Ralph on the rear and Nobby Nic on the front both 2.25

seem to recall a specialsied mud/wet/gloop tyre got a good review in the press a while back, might be worth investigating?

Conti's in black chilli compound for all purpose. That said, why not pack a set of spare folding muds given they'll only add a max of a kilo to your baggage?

I was thinking about that, I could stick a couple of foldable muds in my pack, but my current tyres are UST and wouldn't go in if I switched them mid event...

Minion Super Tacky front, High Roller 60a rear.

Benchmark French Alps tyre set-up.

Or, what ever tyre you normally ride.

Or third option of Wet Screams if it's properly wet.

For pedally riding I used to run Minion F and HR R (both non supertacky). 2.35s

Did the job up to full on mudfest and then was useless. But I could just about pedal up hills on that setup.

For bigger stuff I ran Minion F HR R Dual ply 2.5s with Supertacky up front. Personal preference for gravity assisted riding, rubbish for pedaling.

A lot people run the ardent dual ply or even a big larsen on the rear for more speed, possibly not all that good for the wet though!

When it got really wet, I mostly stacked it, a lot. Good times.

This is not much help really. More a ramble.

Thanks all, sounds like I'm not a million miles off, I'll bag some swamp things and go with my usual HR set-up.

Hoping to keep the the pedalling to the absolute minimum!

In all honesty I reckon you'll be fine on a HR both ends set up. I rode it the PDS last year on my Spicy with 2.35" 60a HR up front, with a 2.25" 62a Maxxis ADvantage on the rear. The ADvantage is very quick but offers bugger all grip in gloopy mud. Luckily the course was fairly dry - I did the event on the Friday - apart from some sections before the descent back into Morzine that were fairly gloopy.

If you really want to go for mud tyres then Swampthings are indeed awesome. I used a supertacky 42a on the front and a 60a on the rear of my hardtail over winter this year, and am considering refitting them given the ste conditions at the moment!

Cheers - good event? I'm doing it with 6 mates on the Friday.

This is our first trip that hasn't been a DH one, not sure it's going to live up to last years week in Whistler, but I have high hopes!

Awesome event! Hopefully you won't be disappointed - I loved the route and just the fun of riding with a load of other folk (it was just the wife and I riding last summer and she's a good bit slower, so I enjoyed having a blast chasing faster folk on the event...). I'd advise starting early as possible and enjoying the food/beer/wine stops on the way round - better to finish early than miss the last lift.

Just wish I was doing it again this year but we've had to knock back out dates til later in the summer to accommodate some schoolteacher mates who're holidaying with us.

Sounds great, will post up plenty of pics!

Looking forward to a slightly slower pace than a week of Bike Park stuff, great fun but I felt out of my depth now and again and I saw some pretty terrible injuries (and doctors bills to go with them) walked into the lodge day 1 "Hi, I'm Steve, sorry I won't make much sense, I've broken 3 vertibre and druged out of my mind"

Still fancy trying 10% on my trail bike - reminds me - must buy some bigger rotors!

For utterly glutinous and sloppy mud, I'd be looking at a Maxxis Wetscream. But dont expect it to work on hard surfaces!

For a slightly less extreme surface, then a Halo knobbler is a grippy bugger and is dirt cheap too
