I have a pair of Shimano shoes and a pair of Northwave boots. Both have Shimano SPD cleats.

The cleats on the shoes are not quite all the way back, and they feel perfectly balanced. The cleats on the boots, on the other hand, are all the way back, and it still feels as though they should be a few mm further back. It's not the size of the boot, as there isn't an inordinate amount of space between my toes and the front of the boot - just seems to be designed slightly differently to the shoe.

Question, then. Is it possible to source alternative cleats which offset the actual cleat part from the baseplate slightly, thus moving the shoe forwards slightly to the position I'd really like it in?

I'd probably go for a Black & Decker or Stanley solution to modify the shoes.

You need to apply a strong dose of rule 5

Seat is now solved, and traffic lights I just have to live with, but the cleats are annoying. I only recently had my first ride on the new bike with my summer shoes (and they really are far too ventilated for anything below mid teens temperatures), and the difference between that and my boots was amazing. Although there can only be a couple of mil in it, it suddenly felt like I was using the whole of my legs properly, rather than my shins and just above my knees!
