Are motorcycle helmets good for bicycle use?

I've been given a bicycle, and I only have motorcycle gear.

Is it A) Legal, B) Safe?

As an owner of both types of hats I would think dying from heat exaustion may be a problem.... Get a proper cycle helmet

A) Yes.
B) Yes.
C) Don't. It'll be hot 'n' sweaty with no escape. Much like a Turkish prison, albeit without things being poked up yer' bum.

Some use an MX lid for DH'ing, but that's about in it terms of crossover.

Wouldn't wear my motorbike helmet on my mountain bike - heavy and way too hot.

Got a full face DH helmet that weighs nothing compared to motorbike helmet and has lots more vents.

Also, I read motorbike helmets are designed to withstand high impact. The trade off is they may not soften the blow do much on lower speed impacts (ie mtb crash) although obviously still keep your head in one piece, but there's the risk of concucion (sp?). Full face mtb helmet, however, will absorb lower impacts well but high speed impact not so well, hence they wouldn't be legal to wear on a motor bike.

Think of the padding a bit like suspension. Set your bike up for a 10 foot drop to flat it's gonna feel stiff on small bumps (the motorbike helmet bring used for mtb). Similarly, set it up for small bumps and you'll bottom out and break your arms on a 10 ft drop to flat (the mtb helmet being used on a motorbike).

Are you off mountain biking?

If not, you don't really need a helmet. Certainly not a motorbike one, it will limit your visibility quite a bit.

Ahhh I was thinking MX helmet for some DH action, some people do, bit it's not idea.

Normal MC helmet for road riding though... no god no. Yeah it's legal, but you'd look a total muppet.

Get a cycle lid, you don't have to spend much, they're all (mostly) the same safety-wise as they have to all meet the same standard.
