Locks - what do you use / trust?

Having replaced the old hack with a rather eye catching ride I think its time I invested in some new security.

Its never going to be a station bike, but I would like to ride it into town for the occasional shopping trip.

Now, the last thread I found on the subject didnt go well - the general advice was, if its a 'station bike' - just buy a cheap one that you dont care about in the first place - keep the nice bike at home, or, use two different styles of lock (make sure the locks are high up from the ground etc..)

As my locks will probably travel with me in a ruck-sac I had been looking at:

And maybe a disc lock as a secondary backup / visual deterrent.

I have exactly that one.

The shackle is quite long though, making it an arse to carry mounted to the bike (and there's no mount for the cable.)

I'd be tempted by a Fahgeddaboutit small shackle.

I spotted those - the lock for bikes left in the big city!

I know you get what you pay for, and if someone really wants your bike - they will take it. But hopefully a 'pretty good' lock would keep my bike safe if locked up in a highly visible area of town for an hour or so.

It really depends on the value of what you're locking up...and where you're doing it. I rarely leave my bike locked up for more than 10mins, though use 2 of these. That's London for you.

The only reason I have 2 of the same lock is I was offered one at a too-good-to-miss price.

I use a Granit X-Plus 54 300 (U-shackle) to secure the bike frame to something solid, and a KryptoFlex key cable to secure the wheels to the frame and shackle. I only leave my bike at work, and although the car park is not really very secure, its miles from anywhere so there is little in the way of passing opportunist tea-leafs!

The combo I use is much more secure than all of the other bikes in the rack, so in theory if someone was to pinch a bike hopefully they would go for an easier to steal one than mine!

Abus Granit came highly recommended, I use that and a high-rated cable lock as well.

I use an Abus Bordo X-Plus. It's great! It came with a case that can either be bolted to the bottle cage mount or velco strapped onto the frame.

Get yourself a big ol' motorbike lock. That'll make the tea-leafs pass on by.

I can't comment on portable locks as I don't use them, but for a shed/garage you can't beat the Pragmasis stuff.

I use the Shed shackle and 16mm chain. The chain itself is heavier than all three of my road bikes combined.

I just spent a sizeable amount on Kryptonite D-lock and also the Kryptonite New York Fabregas chain lock (or whatever it is called). £200 for two locks, but I am determined to win the battle with the bike thieves (after having my previous two bikes nicked from my garden shed)..also ground anchor installed and woodscrews substituted for threadlocked bolts...it will start getting silly on the security front if I am not careful (alsatians and shotguns are a hell of a price!)..

I use the short Kryptonite D lock with the curly cable AND a lockable Kryptonite curly cable extra for my station bike.

Shed bikes have a large Kryptonite D lock with curly cable through all of them, and a bunch of heavy motorbike joint locks through wheels and things.

The Abus ones do get good reviews though.
