Close race in RAAM

Most people probably won't have noticed, but the Race Across America is going on this week. The solo guys have been racing for over 5 days now and, incredibly, there's less than 30 minutes between the front two (after over 2,100 miles!). It could be an interesting few days to go.
I quite fancy having a go at the solo category one day. Just to try and finish it though, not to try and win - I have no idea how the people at the front manage to keep up that pace!

There's a coupla lads who I ride with are there now getting stuck in. They're in the team event & are primed for the win. They missed out on the record last year by seconds due to a time penalty so if lady luck plays her hand they should do well.
The team is Strategic Lions & they're riding to raise money for Help for Heroes as well as bringing some silverware back to blighty....good luck to 'em!

The route is Oceanside (just north of San Diego) to Annapolis (which is probably what you're thinking of.
With 500 miles to go, there's only 7 minutes in it between the leading solo racers now. I dread to think how little sleep they'll try to finish on given how close they're running.
Looks like the 8-man record is likely to be broken as well (not by the Strategic Lions though, I'm afraid).

When we did it I think it was the last year to use Portland to Pensacola. We finished with a three man team 2 hours ahead of the second placed team. We started with 4 guys but one fell off and broke his arm. IIRC we took 6 days and 25 mins.
7 mins is very close, I bet the lead teams are thrashing themselves to bits.
Not Atlanta, it was Atlantic city, New Jersey (my mate did support after me and that the route they took.
The RAAM website is a lot better than it used to be!
